Team Coaching is impactful and empowers self-awareness to achieve better communication.
As an International Corporate Coach, I support a team of six people in their communication process, encouraging better interaction to achieve effective teamwork.
The team manager appeared to have poor communication, a lack of confidence, and a distorted self-perception and image, significantly impacting her professional life and teamwork.
Poor communication: the manager speaks in a bossy tone, doesn't listen actively to the team's members, and fails to create a real connection between them.
Lack of confidence: lack of belief in their abilities and worth, engaging in negative self-talk, and feeling anxious
Distorted self-perception: she believes others don't like her because of her aggressive attitude. It negatively impacts her team management.
Our team coaching session aimed to remove barriers and distorted beliefs to improve teamwork and collaboration within a group, enhance self-awareness and encourage open communication.
I invited each member to share their perception. Creating a safe and non-judgmental environment is crucial. Team members should feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and feelings without fear of criticism or reprisal. I implemented the strategy of a team coaching exercise to gain a better understanding of their own strengths and foster honest and effective communication. I supported team members to provide each other with constructive feedback I asked each team member to assign a totem to another person. The totem would embody their main strength and could be a place, a symbol, an animal, or an object.
They chose:
a lighthouse (sets the direction, keeps safe),
a rock (solid, trustworthy, reference),
a globe (knowledgeable) to some members.

When it came to the manager, she was assigned a lioness, and she got very frustrated: "Here we are again! I feel so upset! The lioness means aggressivity! You all perceive me as being hostile! ". And she wore a thick wrinkle on her forehead and had an angry face, as usual.

I, the coach, asked the team to explain why they chose the lioness.
Team member 1: “a lioness protects her cubs; she feels responsible.”
Team member 2: “a lioness is determined, problem-solving oriented, and gets organized.”
Team member 3: “A persistent lioness finds the best strategy to reach her goal.”
Team member 4: "We feel safe with our manager. She cares for us."
The manager was stunned and had never considered her reputation from a different perspective.
At our one-to-one coaching session the next day, I was delighted to see her bearing a new facial expression: the thick wrinkle was gone, and her face was far more relaxed.
We reflected on the team session, and she said, "The team coaching session was such a transformational experience for me. I realized I was under the misconception that people didn't like me and were afraid of me! This is not true! It has been such a weight to carry for all those years. I feel so relieved and energized!"
The session successfully achieved its goals of fostering growth, improving self-awareness, and enhancing communication within the team.
Working on her self-awareness and encouraging open communication benefited the team. It contributed to a more open and supportive team culture. By implementing more collaborative communication, they achieved better results together.
Coaching enables a culture of open communication and collaboration that can bring numerous benefits to a team, including:
Increased Trust and Cohesion: Open and supportive communication builds trust among team members, which is crucial for effective teamwork.
Enhanced Innovation: When team members feel comfortable sharing their ideas and perspectives openly, it can lead to more innovative solutions and approaches.
Improved Problem-Solving: Collaborative communication allows team members to share their knowledge and expertise, leading to more effective problem-solving.
Conflict prevention: When communication is clear and assertive, conflicts are less likely to escalate, and disagreements can be rapidly addressed and resolved.
Better Decision-Making: Collaboration ensures that decisions are made with input from various team members, resulting in inclusive and informed choices.
Higher Motivation: Teams with a positive and open culture tend to have members who are more motivated and satisfied in their roles.
